There was a
special gathering of this year’s Innovation Generation Scholars on The University of Akron (UA) campus
August 14.

Some of Akron Public Schools (APS) best and brightest attended the special gathering with their families to celebrate their choice to attend The University of Akron this fall.

“The University has picked you to be an ambassador from the Akron Public Schools,” Annie Hanson, director of community relations and engagement at UA, told students. “You are now a Zip. But not just any Zip. You are an Innovation Generation Scholar … one of only 87 in a class of more than 2,800 students.”

Students and families met Interim President John Green, staff members from the offices of admission, financial aid, student life and ZipAssist, among others, learning about myriad ways to get involved on campus and about the many services available to make their UA experience a positive, life-changing one.

Throughout the event, Zippy kept the energy high, and students enjoyed snapping selfies with her. But

one of the event highlights was when Chris Stimler, senior assistant director of admission, prepared the students to be true Zips, leading the entire group in University of Akron spirit cheers!

The Innovation Generation Scholarship was developed in 2012 as part of a partnership between UA and APS to reward high achieving graduates and retain their talent in Northeast Ohio. Recipients of the Innovation Generation Scholarship must have graduated from APS after attending for four years and must have met specific academic requirements. Recipients receive a full tuition scholarship to UA that is renewable for three additional years.
