Image of LIFE ProjectWhile back-to-school time has Summit County youngsters out in full force searching for binders, backpacks and book covers, struggling students and their families confront concerns much greater than finding the right ruler. They face fears of falling behind their classmates academically in the school days ahead.

Community Legal Aid Services in Akron is helping local students with special needs and their families get their school year off to the best start possible with two free LIFE (Learning Is For Everyone) Project workshops. Designed to help link parents and guardians of children with special needs to various education services available, the workshops will take place Sept. 8 from 9-11 a.m. at Mason Community Learning Center, 700 E. Exchange St. in Akron, and Sept. 17 from 6-8 p.m. at Crouse Community Learning Center, 1000 Diagonal Road in Akron.

Led by Legal Aid attorneys, the workshops will reveal options available to accommodate children’s individual educational needs. When a parent or teacher notices a student is falling behind in reading, for instance, what steps can be taken to enable the student to accelerate his or her skills to reach the appropriate grade level? Legal Aid attorneys will address such questions to empower parents to serve as advocates for their children.

“We see parents are often intimated by the process of accessing the right education services available to them,” says Legal Aid Supervising Attorney Andrew Neuhauser, adding that the workshops will help parents and guardians cut through the confusion so “everyone can start further along in the process and spend more time on what is best for the child.”

Legal Aid is partnering with ARC, Akron Children’s Hospital, Akron Summit County Library, Akron Summit Community Action, Akron Public Schools and Summit Education Initiative for this project.

The free workshops will cover support available to student from grades kindergarten through 12th. To register, go to; or text SCHOOL to 77453.
