The 2018 City Series girls soccer championship trophy will be housed at Ellet.

Junior Blake Armsey converted a penalty kick for a goal in the 72nd minute to lift Ellet (11-2, 3-0) to a 3-2 win over Firestone CLC on Wednesday at Copley Road Soccer Complex.

“I was so nervous,” Armsey said. “The only thing running through my mind was, if I don’t make this, we might tie and we might not win.”

“This is my seventh year as head coach and the 11th year for our program, and we had never beaten Firestone,” said Ellet coach Justin Dimengo. “This is a really special team. A lot of these girls started their freshman year, and we kind of struggled. We always knew that this was going to be the team that could really compete against Firestone.”

Senior Morghan Tucker scored in the 10th minute off a pass from her sister, freshman Cameron Tucker.

Ellet’s lead reached 2-0 in the 44th minute on a goal from Cameron Tucker.

“Claire Struhsaker drew a foul and free kicks are my strong point,” Cameron Tucker said.

Sophomore Nya Booker and freshman Cassia Chivers scored goals in the 52nd minute and 65th minute, respectively, for Firestone (2-10, 2-1). Junior Mo Denefield assisted on Booker’s strike.

Ellet senior Madison Wallace had six saves and junior Keianah Easterling had one save.

“Since freshman year, it has always been about competition between Firestone, and this year we knew this was going to be the year where we would put the pressure on them,” Morghan Tucker said.
