Our Official Welcome to Paladina Health

Innovations in Health Care and Education
Posted on 10/19/2018
Image of Paladina HealthThis past week, Akron Public Schools (APS) officially welcomed its friends from Paladina Health to our educational community, the city of Akron and to Summit County.

We cut the ribbon at 400 W. Market St. on the newest Paladina clinic designed strictly for our employees and their families.

This health care innovation for Akron Public Schools is not just about education but innovation for our staff and the way we operate. These are important issues to us as an organization and a large employer in our community.

As superintendent, I'm pleased whenever we take such big, progressive steps that save money and make a wise investment at the same time. As we stood just outside the front door of the new Paladina Health clinic for the ceremony and some light conversation with partners, friends and co-workers, I realized we were in an interesting spot. This building, which also is home to our I PROMISE School -- done in partnership with LeBron James -- is now also a symbol of innovation and a commitment to be good stewards of taxpayer money and good stewards to our employees.

Almost two years ago, leaders from all six of our bargaining groups came together and made some wholesale changes regarding health insurance.

We all successfully negotiated plan design changes that lowered costs and improved the health and welfare for our employees.

We worked to narrow our provider network, giving the school district more bargaining power in the market place.
We hired a new health care consultant, Oswald Companies, who is expertly guiding us through the Paladina process.
Led by our bargaining groups, we brought an innovative approach to direct primary care.

I want to recognize the leaders in our bargaining units for their hard work on this.
  • Lola Booker-Brewer (AACP)
  • Cathy Franklin (AACP)
  • Anna Modzel (MOT)
  • Sheila Dawkins-Flinn (689)
  • Pat Shipe (AEA)
  • Michael Householder (AEA)
Working with our CFO, Ryan Pendleton, we have already begun to see the positive effects of our relationship with Paladina. The staff has shared personal testimonies regarding the level of care Paladina provides.

We know, in the long run, our employees will enjoy better health thanks to this readily available care. We are also seeing dollars that would otherwise be directed to high-cost care being handled at Paladina at little or no cost. That brings us full circle. Being innovative for all areas of the organization allows us to redirect funding back to the classroom.

It is our hope that this innovative approach to employee health care will be considered by other employers in our region.

Below are some images we thought we'd share from the ribbon cutting October 9, 2018.
