The APS Health Education Department is responsible for determining the health education learning, curriculum and resources for grades K-12.

National Health Education Standards

APS uses the National Health Education Standards to guide health education curriculum in grades K-12. The standards are expectations for what students should know and be able to do to promote personal, family and community health. They are assessed in grades 2, 5, 8 and 12.

Health concepts	Understanding the relationship between behavior and health to make informed decisions and selecting appropriate health products and services
Health influences	Recognizing, analyzing and evaluating internal and external influences in making choices that protect and enhance health
Valid health information	Knowing how to access and analyze the numerous sources of information, products and services to build a foundation of positive health behaviors
Interpersonal communication	Conveying and receiving information, beliefs and emotions to manage risk, conflict and differences to promote health
Decision making	Using critical thinking and problem-solving skills to guide health behaviors to foster a sense of control and personal responsibility
Goal setting	Setting goals and translating health knowledge into personally meaningful health behaviors
Health-enhancing behaviors	Using knowledge and skills to manage health and reduce risk-taking behaviors
Health promotion	Promoting personal, family and community health to establish an interdependent and mutually supportive lifestyle
