Professional school counselors are uniquely qualified to address the academic, career and personal/social developmental needs of all APS students through a comprehensive school counseling program.

School counselors serve as essential advocates for students and catalysts for positive change within the school community. At Akron Public Schools, our team of counselors supports the academic, career, and social-emotional development of every scholar. They work together to ensure students are equipped to succeed in school and beyond the classroom.

Through individualized guidance, group support, and collaboration with families and educators, counselors help students navigate challenges, build resilience, and make informed decisions about their futures.

School counselors can help students with:

  • Academics: Improving grades through study skills support, monitoring attendance, setting short- and long-term academic goals, and helping students stay on track for graduation.
  • Careers: Exploring career interests and pathways, participating in college and career field trips and guest speaker events, assisting with college applications and enrollment, and supporting transitions into employment or military service.
  • Social-Emotional Growth: Developing healthy relationships, learning effective communication and conflict resolution skills, managing stress and life changes, and accessing support during personal or family challenges.
