The just-released Ohio State Report Card includes the annual high school rankings; for the second year in a row, Akron Early College High School (AECHS) ranked first among all schools in Summit County, tying Hudson High School and outperforming Revere and Green high schools. (See below.)

AECHS Principal Thomas O’Neill sent his families and staff a note, saying, “I would like to congratulate students, staff and AECHS families for this outstanding accomplishment. Year after year, AECHS ranks among the top schools in the county, as well as the state. This is a tribute to all members of our school community.” O’Neill added:

  • Parents and guardians, thank you for your consistent support of your sons and daughters and our staff in this very challenging program.
  • Staff, thank you for your hard work, your professionalism and your commitment to the success of every single one of our students. Not only do you prepare our students with the skills they need to be academically successful, you also create a safe and welcoming environment where our students can thrive and be themselves. They not only grow as students at AECHS, they grow as people.
  • Students, thank you for your hard work, your commitment to your education and your commitment to our school. I tell anyone who will listen, you are the most resilient kids in Summit County, and I mean it. Your grit and determination set you apart from your peers across the county.

Success, he said, is truly a team effort.

APS Superintendent Dr. Michael Robinson said he was “very pleased” to hear the news but not surprised. “Mr. O’Neill and his team, along with his families, work as partners for the enrichment of their students year after year. What is being done at Akron Early College is worth celebrating. This is a win for Akron Public Schools.”

AECHS also earned a 5-Star rating in every category on the report card as well as an overall 5-Star rating (the highest rating possible.)

AECHS is located in the Polsky Building on The University of Akron campus. APS students attend classes at AECHS and at UA. When they graduate, they receive their diplomas from APS and a two-year degree (associates) from UA.

“At AECHS, we do the little things so we can achieve the big things. Day after day, week after week, families, teachers and students do the little things to achieve the big things,” said Principal O’Neill.
