Akron Public Schools Supports Empowering Experience for Young Women at MLK Female Youth Symposium

MLK Youth Symposium Facilitators

Akron Public Schools was proud to support the Akron MLK Power Love and Justice Female Youth Symposium, an event focused on uplifting, empowering, and connecting young women across our community. Through strong partnerships and shared commitment, the symposium created a meaningful space for students to learn, reflect, and build confidence.

More than 40 young ladies participated in this year’s symposium, with over 140 educators, mentors, and community members engaging throughout the day. Students had the opportunity to hear directly from Emilia Sykes and Mary B. Outley, who served as keynote speakers. Additional speakers included Pastor Lesa Lavender and Shayla Davis, along with spoken word artist Xyposur, whose performance left a lasting impact on participants.

Students rotated through breakout sessions designed to support both personal and academic growth. Topics included creative expression, healthy relationships, career and life pathways, college experiences, planning skills, self care, and mental health and wellness. Each session was led by female leaders and professionals from the Akron community who shared practical guidance and real world perspectives.

The day also included a special creative project inspired by Gee’s Bend quilting. With the support of Judge Stormer and Judge Towell, the quilt created by students will be displayed at the Summit County Courthouse during the month of February, highlighting student voice and creativity beyond the school setting.

The symposium concluded with a reflective circle activity led by Project Ujima, giving students the opportunity to share takeaways and affirm one another. The day ended on a high note with music and line dancing led by DJ Smeech, bringing energy and joy to the close of the event.

Akron Public Schools is grateful to our community partners for their collaboration and continued commitment to creating safe, empowering spaces for young women. Experiences like this reinforce the importance of supporting students not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well.
