APS Announces Closure of Conrad Ott Building

Akron Public Schools (APS) has announced the closure of the Conrad Ott (OTT) building for educational services, effective June 2025. This decision, while difficult, is a necessary step in the district's long-term strategy to efficiently manage its assets while ensuring a safe and high-quality learning environment for all students and staff.
The closure of the OTT building was part of the district's 2023 Long Term Operational Plan and was originally scheduled for the end of the 2023-24 school year. However, upon the Superintendent's arrival, the administration extended the building's operation for an additional year to allow sufficient time for restructuring and reorganization efforts impacting several district facilities. This extension provided the necessary time for careful planning and a smooth transition.
This strategic decision reflects the district’s commitment to responsible fiscal management. The age and condition of the OTT building presented ongoing maintenance challenges and costs. Closing the facility allows APS to consolidate resources and invest in modern learning spaces that better serve the needs of our students and teachers.
Regarding the future of the OTT building, APS will adhere to Ohio Revised Codes that govern the disposal of obsolete school property. This process involves several key steps including appraisals, offers to qualifying entities and STEM schools within APS territory, a public auction (if no qualifying entities express interest), and subsequent board approval.
There is other Ohio Revised Code related to real estate disposal; but, as long as APS uses the OTT building for storage (educational materials, equipment, etc.), we are not obligated to activate the disposal plan. The district is currently reviewing the process with legal counsel to ensure full compliance with ORC 3313.413.
Regarding the Stewart building, the administration is exploring the possibility of relocating the Akron Alternative Academy to that location. Further details about this plan will be shared as they become available.
Akron Public Schools remains committed to providing the best possible educational experience for its students and appreciates the community’s understanding and support during this transition.
