APS Celebrates Scholars of the Year
Akron Public Schools (APS) hosted its first Scholar of the Year Awards Ceremony on May 15th at the Garfield CLC Auditorium, a night filled with inspiration and pride. The district recognized 44 outstanding students, each selected as their school’s Building Scholar of the Year, for demonstrating a commitment to learning, citizenship, leadership, and community involvement.
“As we celebrate these exceptional young people, let us recognize that they represent our future,” stated Superintendent Mary B. Outley, an Akron Public Schools alumna. “Each honoree has demonstrated academic prowess, determination, and character that will carry them forward in life.”
Each Scholar of the Year was first nominated by the school’s staff as their Building Scholar of the Year. From this group, students had the opportunity to apply for the District Scholar of the Year award. Applicants completed a comprehensive selection process, which included submitting a letter of recommendation, an essay on the importance of making a difference in their community, and a video presentation on someone who inspired them.
The evening began with a lively reception. Guests enjoyed snacks prepared by Garfield CLC’s Culinary Arts students, a fun-filled photo booth, and selfies with Gilby, the district mascot. The Garfield CLC Jazz Band provided an energetic soundtrack, and guests were welcomed and supported throughout the evening by the Garfield Student Ambassadors, who served as event hosts.
Inside the Garfield CLC Auditorium, the atmosphere was electric. Tommy Bruno of 91.3 The Summit FM served as the Master of Ceremony, and the Garfield CLC Army Junior ROTC presented a memorable presentation of colors. The program also featured a beautiful musical performance by Iveren Iordaah, a student from Firestone CLC. Hundreds of guests filled the auditorium, their admiration and applause echoing throughout the night.
“Every single day, I witness potential transform into possibility,” said Dr. Tamea Caver, assistant superintendent and chief academic officer. “We’re not just managing a school district; we’re cultivating futures, sparking dreams, and watching young minds discover their incredible power to change the world.”
The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the District Scholar of the Year award. Three exceptional scholars received this honor: Olivia Hotes (Firestone CLC) for high school, Daelynne Eastern (NIHF STEM Middle School) for middle school, and Sakina Subba (Seiberling CLC) for elementary school.
“Tonight’s honorees represent the best of APS—young minds whose dedication, curiosity, and perseverance inspire us all,” said Superintendent Outley.
The district extends its heartfelt congratulations to all the Scholars of the Year and their families. Akron Public Schools is immensely proud of these students and their accomplishments.
