Esports is booming across the country, and Akron Public Schools (APS) is at the forefront of this exciting movement. With students showcasing their skills in games like Fortnite, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Apex Legends and even Chess, APS teams have made a name for themselves on both regional and state levels.
Dominating the Fortnite Arena
At the top of the leaderboards, Akron STEM 1 and Akron STEM 2 placed first and second in their group for Fortnite Premier, earning spots in the OHSAA Regional and State Championships. Competing against 28 schools on April 12, these students will battle for the state title — a chance to cement Akron’s reputation as a powerhouse in scholastic esports. Meanwhile, Akron STEM’s Reserve Fortnite team has also secured a place in the Esports Ohio Reserve State Championship on April 1, proving that Akron is a force to be reckoned with.
Rocket League Rises to the Challenge
One of the most popular games in high school esports, Rocket League, saw Akron STEM’s Premier team finish tied for second in their group. They will compete at Baldwin Wallace University on April 6, with hopes of qualifying for the OHSAA State Championships at The University of Akron on April 26-27.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: A Historic Season
For the first time, nearly every APS high school participated in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at the Premier level. Akron Buchtel led the charge, tying for first place in their group and securing a Regional Championship bid at Baldwin Wallace University on April 5. Meanwhile, other schools — including Akron STEM, Akron Ellet, Akron Firestone, Akron Garfield and Akron North — competed fiercely in the same division, making for a thrilling season filled with intense rivalries and standout performances.
Chess and Strategy on the Rise
Esports isn't just about fast reflexes — it is also about strategy. Akron Garfield’s Chess Team clinched a State Championship spot, earning a place among Ohio’s top school teams in an online tournament beginning March 19.
Looking Ahead
While some APS teams narrowly missed post-season play, the 2025 season demonstrated incredible progress and participation across the district. The passion and dedication of these students continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in high school esports. As they prepare for their upcoming championship matches, the entire APS community will be cheering them on.
