Buchtel’s Air Force JROTC Program Receives Prestigious 2025 Distinguished Unit Award

Akron, OH – June 3, 2025 – Buchtel Community Learning Center is proud to announce that its Air Force Junior ROTC unit, OH-942, has been awarded the 2025 Distinguished Unit Award by Headquarters AFJROTC. This national recognition honors cadet-led programs that consistently exceed expectations in areas of leadership, service, and academic performance.

Master Sergeant DeSarro and Lieutenant Colonel Arellano shared that the notification was received this morning from their Regional Director. “This recognition reflects the tireless efforts of our cadets,” said MSgt DeSarro. “This is a 100% cadet-led program, and their dedication to excellence is what earned us this award.”

Key accomplishments by Buchtel AFJROTC during the 2024–25 school year include:
Exceeds Standards rating on the annual cadet-led Air Force compliance inspection
682 total hours of community service, averaging 10.33 hours per cadet

  • Participation in 7 drill competitions, including being named overall champions of the 2025 East Marine Corps JROTC Drill Meet
  • 534 leadership development hours, averaging 8.09 hours per cadet
  • Zero disciplinary actions recorded among cadets
  • 45% of cadets maintained Honor or Merit Roll status each grading period
  • $261,000 in scholarships earned by graduating cadet seniors

Headquarters AFJROTC will be sending a congratulatory letter and official certificate for display at Buchtel CLC.
“This award is not about what the instructors have done,” said Lt Col Arellano. “It’s about what these incredible young people have achieved through their own initiative, leadership, and teamwork.”
