Supt. Visits I PROMISE School on First Day Back
- I Promise
The first day back to school after summer break at I PROMISE School (IPS) is always a special occasion, filled with excitement and anticipation. As the sun rises on July 29, scholars eagerly make their way to the school, ready to embark on a new academic journey. IPS starts a month ahead of other Akron public schools, following its distinct calendar. The early start allows scholars to dive into their studies and character-building activities, setting a strong foundation for the year ahead.
IPS, a collaborative effort between Akron Public Schools and NBA star LeBron James, is more than just a school; it’s a community. The school emphasizes the importance of parental involvement, with regular events designed to engage parents and create a supportive environment in the classroom and at home. This approach ensures that students receive the encouragement and resources they need to succeed academically and personally.
Supt. Dr. Michael Robinson was on hand today, this first day, as parents and guardians walked their children to class, participating in welcome activities and meeting teachers, all contributing to the vibrant, inclusive atmosphere IPS at APS is known for.
The school’s commitment to educating the whole person is evident in its wrap-around supports, which focus on academics and character development. As scholars enter, they are greeted with a curriculum that challenges their minds and nurtures their spirits. Teachers and staff are dedicated to fostering a love of learning and instilling values such as perseverance, empathy and integrity.
As the day progresses, scholars engage in activities designed to reintroduce them to the school routine, reconnect with friends and set goals for the year. The first day at IPS is not just about returning to school; it’s about reigniting the passion for learning and building a strong, supportive community.
APS Supt. Dr. Michael Robinson and the LeBron James Family Foundation team were on hand to greet each scholar and staff member as they arrived for day one of year seven at I PROMISE School (IPS). With hugs and high fives flowing, the steady stream of students arrived ready and eager for another strong year ahead under the leadership of Principal Stephanie Davis.
With IPS operating on a slightly different calendar to minimize the recognized “summer slide” and maximize their learning potential, the students returned to campus today after an energizing summer that included IPS swim camp, basketball camp and other opportunities furnished by the Foundation.
Opened in 2018, I PROMISE School is now at full capacity, serving grades three through eight with a quality and enriching public education infused with LJFF’s We Are Family philosophy.
Through the on-site Family Resource Center, the Foundation layers in critical wrap-around supports that include Job & Family Services, legal aid, the I Promise Too GED program for parents, and an on-site pantry for food and essentials.
IPS continues to thrive under the leadership of Principal Davis, now in year two of her tenure, that has seen strong scholar growth and achievement across the board.
