Literacy: A Key to Lifelong Learning 2025

Three young children, two girls and one boy, are sitting together and reading a book in what appears to be a classroom or daycare setting, with colorful walls and furniture visible in the background.

This fall, Superintendent Mary B. Outley is launching four powerful reading initiatives designed to ignite a love for literacy and strengthen connections across the APS community. These efforts are rooted in the belief that reading is the foundation for lifelong learning, personal growth, and future success.

By promoting reading at every grade level, the Superintendent is building more than just strong academic skills—she’s cultivating a district-wide culture of literacy that unites classrooms, families, and communities through the power of shared stories.

These initiatives go beyond books. They are intentional opportunities to spark joy in reading, increase equitable access to literature, and uplift core values like empathy, resilience, kindness, and curiosity. From a district-wide book club and monthly reading challenges to engaging storytime events for our youngest learners, each program reflects a deep commitment to both academic excellence and the social-emotional development of every child.
Because when we read together, we grow together. And as Superintendent Outley believes — when students read, they don’t just understand the world around them… they begin to discover their place within it.

It’s fun to encourage daily reading habits, promote literacy, and celebrate our students’ dedication, one page and one bite at a time!
