NIHF STEM High School scholars are embarking on an exciting new chapter as they transition to their new home at Robinson CLC. Formerly located on The University of Akron campus, the move represents a significant milestone, offering students a modern environment specifically designed to foster creativity, innovation and academic excellence. This relocation marks a pivotal moment for the school, which has long been a leader in providing students with hands-on, real-world experiences in STEM.
A Space Designed for Excellence and Innovation
The atmosphere at Robinson CLC is buzzing with anticipation as students and staff embrace the new opportunities this space provides. Principal Dina Popa describes the facility as "awesome," with both staff and students energized by the fresh start. This more intimate setting has strengthened the sense of community among the 331 enrolled scholars, while also offering state-of-the-art facilities that rival those found at leading universities.
At Robinson CLC, students have access to advanced cybertechnology labs, biotech and chemistry facilities, and collaborative learning spaces. One standout addition is the Aquaponics Lab, where students can engage in sustainable environmental practices by integrating fish and plant cultivation. This hands-on learning environment aligns with the school’s mission to inspire future leaders in sustainability and innovation.
The new building also includes specialized pathways within its College and Career Academy program, offering Biotechnology, Cybersecurity and Environmental Engineering. These pathways provide students with opportunities for job shadowing, internships, credentialing and college coursework—preparing them for successful careers and higher education in some of today’s most in-demand fields.
Seamless Access to College Courses
Despite the change in location, students’ access to college courses through The University of Akron has remained intact. The new transportation plan ensures that College Credit Plus students can travel easily between Robinson CLC and the university. Akron METRO offers pick-up and drop-off services just two blocks from the school every 15 minutes, making the two-mile commute convenient and maintaining a high level of participation in college-level classes.
A Thriving Community of Innovators
This move has not only enhanced the physical learning environment but also deepened the school’s sense of unity. The dedicated space at Robinson CLC has transformed the school into a hub of energy and potential, where students collaborate closely and develop innovative ideas. The scholars at NIHF STEM are not only learning, they are preparing to lead the future of innovation.
The school’s extracurricular activities continue to thrive, with the VEX Robotics team achieving multiple state championships. The Esports program has also gained momentum, providing students with the opportunity to hone critical thinking and teamwork skills in a rapidly growing field.
A Future Full of Potential
As part of Akron Public Schools’ broader strategy to optimize resources, this relocation highlights the district’s commitment to providing students with the best possible learning environments. The move to Robinson CLC ensures that NIHF STEM High School scholars have a place where they can thrive both academically and personally.
Construction on the facility is progressing smoothly, with no delays. Teachers have proactively adjusted to ensure uninterrupted learning, utilizing alternative resources and technologies like virtual simulations and 3D printing. The installation of lab materials, set to begin September 27, will further enrich the student learning experience.
NIHF STEM High School has consistently earned accolades for its academic rigor and innovative programs, including a #1 ranking as the Best School in Akron by U.S. News & World Report and a 4.5 STAR rating on the State Report Card. The public will have the chance to experience the new facility firsthand during an open house in October, featuring student-led demonstrations, lab tours and presentations by student leaders.
"As a former STEM principal, I am incredibly proud of the direction our program is heading. The dedication of our scholars, the expertise of our teachers and the outstanding leadership of Principal Popa are shaping future leaders in medicine, engineering and beyond," said the Superintendent of Akron Public Schools Dr. Michael Robinson. "This new chapter at Robinson CLC strengthens our commitment to nurturing innovators, problem-solvers and advocates for a better tomorrow."
As NIHF STEM High School embarks on this new era, its scholars are set to continue excelling and leading in STEM fields. This unique space is more than just a school—it is a launchpad for the next generation of thinkers, creators and leaders.
