Student Board Members Shine at Statewide Conference, Amplifying Scholar Voice

AKRON, OH – June 27, 2025 – Akron Public Schools (APS) is thrilled to announce the outstanding representation of its students at the recent Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) Leadership Institute in Columbus. Four dedicated APS Student Board Members – Deva’on Caldwell-Sales, Shay’leia Davis, Jordan Leason and Xyia West – proudly presented on "Scholar Voice: Amplifying and Elevating, Putting the Power in Students’ Hands."

This powerful presentation highlighted the crucial role of student perspectives in shaping school culture and policies, and our students did an incredible job elevating the voice of APS scholars on a statewide stage. The initiative is a cornerstone of our commitment to meaningful student engagement and leadership, championed by the Office of School Counseling and Student Wellness (SCSW).

Fellow conference attendees, including board members from numerous school districts across Ohio, were thoroughly impressed by the student presentation. Their positive feedback underscored the impact of our students' message:

"Thank you so much for your outstanding presentation! Participants were so enthused by your session; the message was clear and your students were delightful," shared Teri Morgan, Senior Deputy Director, Board and Management Services at OSBA.

Ray A. Freeman, Board Vice President for Warrensville Heights City Schools and President of the National School Board Organization, remarked, “Your scholars displayed professional behavior and maturity and demonstrated how great your Board has given the Students a chance to voice their experiences. As the President of the National School Board Organization, it was highly inspiring and impressive.”

The Scholar Voice program at APS is instrumental in providing leadership and developmental opportunities for our secondary students. It helps them discover their passions, boost their motivation and become strong advocates for themselves and their community. Through various leadership programs and opportunities, Scholar Voice fosters networking, mentoring and team-building skills, preparing students for great things ahead.

"Their ability to articulate the importance of student perspectives with such professionalism and passion truly makes us proud and demonstrates the power of investing in young leaders."

Eric Fletcher, College Access Program Manager for the District, added, "It was inspiring to see our students confidently present and advocate for the critical role of student voice. Their dedication to amplifying scholar perspectives is a testament to their leadership and the impactful work being done at APS."
