Summer 'Camps' Unlike Any Other

Summer 'Camps' Unlike Any Other

Akron Public Schools is proud of the way it works to offset the summer slump, as it's called. Educators have watched it for years. Summer arrives, and scholars take a much-deserved break -- so much so that often times their grades suffer when they return to school in the fall. One solution?

This is expanded learning. We keep learning alive all year but make it especially fun in June, July and August so kids stay sharp. To parents and grandparents who may have had summer school offered when they were students, let us say this is nothing like that! The APS 'camp' emphasizes experiences that take scholars on a Summer Adventure each day.

Want to know about one of their favorite programs? Our scholars are letting their imaginations run wild this summer at Glazed and Amused Summer Art Camp. Students engage in hands-on art activities that spark creativity with different materials and art techniques. More than 200 kids in grades 1-5 have spent all or part of June/July at various locations throughout the district. Here is some of what they have created.
