The Ericka D. Weems Memorial Scholarship: was established to honor the memory of Ericka D. Weems who, passed on November 1, 2020. Ericka was raised in West Akron and was a 2002 graduate of John R. Buchtel High School. Ericka attended The Ohio State University, earning her Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education. She then acquired her Master’s degree in Education from Kent State University. Ericka would go on to open her daycare, Recess Child Development Center in 2012. Ericka loved children and had a fond love for helping the community. She had a huge heart showcased in her selflessness and willingness to help others.
Each year up to four scholarships will be awarded to Buchtel High School seniors who will be pursuing higher education beyond high school. To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must be attending Buchtel High School, have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and have a minimum of 10 community service hours. Well-rounded high school seniors who demonstrate a significant commitment to volunteer service to our community are encouraged to apply. Awarding the Ericka D. Weems Memorial Scholarship is contingent on several criteria, including acceptance to and enrollment in a two-year or four-year college and a complete application. Additionally, applicants must submit a 500-word essay for the prompt provided on the application. Scholarship recipients are expected to use their resources wisely and uphold a high standard of conduct.
