nihf stem middle school
The National Inventors Hall of Fame STEM Middle School is the result of an innovative partnership between: Akron Public Schools, the City of Akron, the National Inventors Hall of Fame® Foundation, The University of Akron, Akron Tomorrow and the Greater Akron Chamber. It is a future that leaves 20th-century education practices behind. It is a time when students must be free to think, create, communicate and innovate in a rapidly changing world. It is a place that opens its doors to a new generation of teaching, learning and problem solving. The time is now; and the place is a science, technology, engineering and math middle school operated by Akron Public Schools and located inside the National Inventors Hall of Fame®. The program will be strengthened by the expertise of The University of Akron along with the support and collaboration of the City of Akron.

We believe that ongoing, sustained professional development for all members of the school community is critical to the success of the school.
Mission:
To nurture a community of empowered learners who will succeed in a global society
Vision:
To provide the highest quality education experience for students (learners) that ensures creativity and inventive thinking through a focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics
Core Values:
Innovation: creation rising from thought, study and experimentation
Inquiry: seeking information by asking questions, exploring and investigating
Inspiration: igniting ambition and creativity in ourselves and others
Integrity: truth, honor and trust: doing the right thing even when no one is watching

Learning Philosophy:
Scientific inquiry and technological design are the cornerstones of instruction for our school. Our learning environments focus on personalized learning and teamwork skills while incorporating engineering, entrepreneurship, personal finance, music, art, humanities and other content areas.
Learning coaches act as advisers who work with small groups of learners to set goals and identify rigorous coursework to meet those goals. State-of-the-art technology is used to achieve academic excellence, creative instruction and 21st-century skills.
Learners will
- become creative and inventive to help solve real-world problems.
- participate in service learning projects.
- have learning opportunities beyond the school day.
Learning is expanded by
- access to The University of Akron faculty and research labs.
- distance learning opportunities.
- comprehensive curriculum implemented by research-based teaching and learning practices with a science, technology, engineering and mathematics focus.
- after-school enrichment programs.
What is a Learning Coach?
Educators and teachers are called “learning coaches” at NIHF STEM Middle School because of the learning atmosphere created in the classroom. Just as coaches for sports provide lessons that they expect their team to perform, the NIHF STEM learning coaches approach the pursuit of knowledge similarly.
What is a Learner?
At NIHF STEM Middle School, our young inventors are not just students -- they are learners. By changing the terms, our school embraces a culture where everyone learns and leads.
