Interpreter Needs
  1. If I do not speak English and need an interpreter to help translate, what do I do?
To ensure that our Limited English Proficient parents are able to access the many wonderful programs APS provides and to answer any questions that our families may have, APS employs 30 language interpreters to support our Limited English Proficient parents. If you need an interpreter, please call your child's school or the ESL Department at 330.761.3190; and ask for an interpreter. APS will connect our families to a language interpreter as soon as possible within work hours. If there is a language that APS does not have available, APS will reach out to local agencies to seek assistance.
School Closure Procedures
  1. How will I learn if my child's school is going to be closed due to bad weather?
If inclement weather forces us to close schools, we will notify parents and caregivers between 5:45-6:15 a.m. at the latest and will send information through the mainstream media, social media, the APS website and by automated calls. Depending upon the track of any particular weather disturbance, notification could come the night before.
  2. How will I find out my child is being sent home early due to weather conditions?
Akron Public Schools notifies parents and caregivers through the media, our website, social media and automated calls.
  3. Who decides to close school?
The superintendent makes the final decision, after consulting with safety and transportation officials and City of Akron street and road crews.
  4. What are the acceptable reasons to close school?
Acceptable reasons include hazardous weather; interruption of water, electricity or similar services; and other conditions making it impractical to open a school building or conditions that warrant closing. Weather variables include wind chill temperature, visibility, and street or sidewalk conditions (ice or deep snow).
  5. Will after-school, before-school or weekend activities be canceled?
We cancel after-school activities when all schools are closed. Activities are canceled at individual schools or groups of schools if those schools are closed. We cancel before-school activities when all schools, one school or a group of schools are closed. APS will judge weekend activities on a day-to-day basis (i.e., Friday, Saturday and Sunday will each be judged separately). Activities will be canceled if schools are closed on a Friday, unless otherwise directed by the superintendent.
