Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year, a year that we are proudly calling “The Year of Literacy.” This year, APS is excited to launch three powerful reading initiatives that will ignite a love of books in every child, bring families and schools closer together, and help us build a community where literacy is not just taught, it’s celebrated.
At APS, we believe reading is more than just a skill; it’s a superpower that opens doors, fuels curiosity, and empowers every student to discover their voice and their place in the world.
#1: One District, One Theme at a Time (K - Grade 12)

From kindergarten all the way through grade 12, we’ll be reading around themes like kindness, confidence, and growth. And here’s the fun part — schools will compete for traveling trophies to see who reads the most. Each winning school gets to add their own special mark to the trophy, so it becomes a one-of-a-kind symbol of our APS family. After reading a book, complete the Google Form on the right.

#2: One District, One Book: A Journey with Humphrey
Friendship According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney
All second and third grade students will receive a free copy of Friendship According to Humphrey, a heartwarming story about a lovable classroom hamster who learns big lessons about kindness, friendship, and community. This shared experience across the district will strengthen the connection between home and school, and encourage meaningful conversations about friendship and community.
#3: Once Upon a Storytime (PreK-Grade 3)
Once Upon a Storytime is a new weekly tradition where special guest readers from across our community, will share our favorite children’s books aloud. Each story will be streamed online every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. on our APS YouTube, giving families a chance to tune in from home and enjoy the magic of a shared story together.
