We have taken several hours and compressed them into about a minute's worth of images of the work done by Akron Public Schools and Barberton Tree Service this week to carefully remove Rotaynah, the massive Native American carved, statue that has withstood the elements in Akron and honors Native American history.
The carved, red oak statue at Resnik Community Learning Center on West Market Street between Akron and Fairlawn has been worn away by weather and termites, despite ongoing efforts to fortify and protect it.
The statue, carved out of a 20-ton Kentucky red oak, had its feathers removed in 2011 when they became too heavy for the structure to bear. A week ago, Akron Public Schools determined---for safety reasons---Rotaynah had to come down and be carefully put into storage.
Experts are seeking ideas to ensure the statue can still be somehow on display somewhere in the future.
