Board President Patrick Bravo congratulates Nathan Dort (L) and Robert Frazier (R) at the January 22, 2018, school board meeting.

Congressman Tim Ryan announced several weeks ago the winning team for the 2017 Congressional App Challenge: Nathan Dort and Robert Frazier from the National Inventors Hall of Fame High School. Their app entitled “The Truth About Opioids” was developed in response to the topic derived from a problem-based learning scenario involving Summit County Public Health and the Akron Fire Department.

Last night, the School Board of Akron Public Schools recognized them -- and their teacher Sam Appleby -- as well for their innovative work.

"We all want to congratulate Nathan Dort and Robert Frazier from NIHF STEM High School for their work on this project,” said Board President Patrick Bravo.

The goals of the Congressional App Challenge are to ensure continued growth and innovation in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields and to encourage students to excel in those occupations. Congressman Ryan has said that by 2018, the U.S. is going to need up to three million new, highly-skilled workers in the STEM field. He added, "It is crucial that we make every effort to provide students with an opportunity to develop the skills necessary for tomorrow’s job market.”
