This fall, three APS schools participated in a sock collection project for Project RISE, "Socktober," which originated in October 2014 at Sam Salem CLC. The project began with teacher Megan Kalil and her NOW (No Opportunity Wasted) students. This year, socks were collected at Sam Salem CLC, Rimer CLC and Litchfield CLC. Project RISE distributed some of the socks at its annual Harvest Dinner in November. The rest were given out to families living in homeless shelters or transitional housing programs.
The "Socktober" project was coordinated by Sam Salem CLC fifth-grade teacher Edward Savoy, and the school's NOW students collected 947 pairs of socks. The first-grade class won a pizza party for collecting 178 pairs. Litchfield's efforts were coordinated by teacher Sandra Cline, and the socks were donated to the DLM Food & Resource Room (a Project RISE facility at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church).
