The students, from Jennings CLC (middle school) and Akron Early College High School have a real knack for the game of chess. That, actually, is an understatement. Last year, the Jennings students took first place in the state in what was their first test at that level of play.

One month ago, Jennings' chess team received first place in the Canton Scholastic Chess Tournament. Jennings students also won first place overall (Reserve Division) for the tournament.

APS Akron Early College High School also won first place --overall, a good day after a total of four tournaments. Jennings came in first place in the reserve division at each tournament. (Since the school is the overall winner, Jennings now holds the traveling trophy this year as well!)

In April, at this year's state tournament, Jennings finished in second place.

This year, we saw graduates of Jennings, now at Akron Early College High School, wanting to keep up the chess competition. So, they started up at Early College High, and now APS has two chess teams -- essentially -- from Jennings.

Early College also came in first place in Canton.

"It was another awesome day!" That's what Joanne Cook said. Joanne teaches pre-algebra at Jennings.

Kudos to Jennings Principal Charles Jones for his vision for chess at his school.
