Board of Education Considering Levy For Fall

Image of Update SignAkron Public Schools Board of Education, in a special meeting Monday, July 20, 2020, approved three resolutions that will help begin to explain to taxpayers how much of an investment a new school levy might be.

Board members certified millages of 6.9, 7.9 and 8.9 mills that would allow the district to tell people how much money would be generated by each, should the school district go to voters with a levy.

CFO Ryan Pendleton said budget reductions will be considered if the district does not have an inflow of new monies “soon." He also pointed out that it has been eight years since APS asked voters to consider a levy. “A full two years longer than what we have historically done,” he added.

One of Ohio’s so-called Big Eight urban districts, Akron has nearly 21,000 students in 45 schools. In May, a five-year forecast showed a deficit of $3.6 million in the district’s $350 million operating budget at the end of this year that could grow to more than $15 million by June 2021. Monday night, the projected five-year deficit stood at $14 million.
