Image of David W. James, Ed.D.After almost 29 years with the Akron City School District and 12 as superintendent, David W. James, Ed.D., has made the decision to retire, effective June 30, 2021.

“It’s time,” said James after submitting his notice to the Akron Public Schools (APS) Board of Education at last week’s retreat. “This has been challenging and fulfilling for me; I have been honored to work with students, parents, dedicated educators and community leaders who have all come together to make Akron Public Schools stronger than it was 12 years ago.”

"Under Dr. James' leadership, Akron Public Schools has transformed teaching and learning into a nationally recognized model; and the board of education would like to thank him for his years of service to the children in our community," said Board president Patrick Bravo. "The impact Dr. James has had on our district is undeniable, and the legacy he leaves with us will be felt for years to come."

David James has a long list of accomplishments (see bio) that include the creation of College & Career Academies of Akron (CCAA), a transformative approach to education that brings students together with businesses, non-profits and higher education experiences to further their future. Under James, the phrase Connecting Community to the Classroom became more than a tag line or a catch phrase as nearly 300 community organizations and corporations have partnered with Akron Public Schools in CCAA.

James also led APS through the facilities project to create new schools for students. In an $800 million effort supported by Akron’s taxpayers, the schools and the state of Ohio joined forces to construct 36 new schools, now known as community learning centers, that serve students by day and the people of the city in late afternoon and evening.

“The job can be grueling and yet rewarding at the same time,” James said. “It’s not meant to be a lifetime appointment. Akron Public Schools should welcome someone who can bring some new energy and ideas to the job.”
