The ideal job candidate for an educational assistant would be someone who had a job in the past working with children who have special needs ages 3-18. This candidate could be someone who is taking online classes or classes in the evening to become a special education teacher. Tuition reimbursement is offered as a benefit through our OAPSE union, which is the educational assistant union. Our goal is to grow our own. We want educational assistants to one day become special educational teachers. If candidates do not have a background working specifically with special needs students, they should have a background working with adults who have special needs and have experience working with children in a day care setting.

To be eligible for full time employment as an educational assistant, candidates must be highly qualified, which means having completed 48 semester hours through an accredited college or university or completed 72 quarter hours through an accredited college or university or hold an associate's degree or higher. If candidates do not have any education outside of a high school diploma or GED which is essential, there is a test they can take called the paraprofessional praxis exam. They would have to successfully pass the paraprofessional praxis exam.

The ideal job candidate for a substitute educational assistant must have a high school diploma or GED and the same qualifications as the full time educational assistant. These candidates do not need to be highly qualified and should want to grow and have a career with Akron Public Schools. Candidates will be provided with the tools they need to pass the paraprofessional praxis exam so they can be hired as full time educational assistants.

Full time educational assistants and substitute educational assistants must be able to work Monday-Friday, 7:45 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

Candidates must successfully pass a background check and must be physically fit because there is lifting involved when caring for a student in a wheelchair or a walker. Other needed attributes are patience, kindness, dependability, willingness to take direction, and being able to work collaboratively with teachers and the student's parents for the success of the student.

Please see the flier below for other information and how to apply.
