Bridgestone became a named academy partner to APS in 2018, and in the fall of the 2018-19 school year, the company worked with APS to replicate the environment of a Firestone Complete Auto Care automotive service center within East CLC. In cooperation with Bridgestone, APS retrofitted a portion of the existing automotive technology lab at East CLC and Bridgestone donated materials, fixtures and point-of-sale systems. Each year, the center gives up to 100 students hands-on experience working with state-of-the-art automotive technology while learning business practices essential to running a retail store.

APS Superintendent David W. James, Ed.D, said, “One of our important measures of success of College & Career Academies of Akron will be based on how many of our partners renew their partnerships . We are grateful for Bridgestone’s commitment to our students and Akron Public Schools.”

“There are tremendous opportunities in the automotive technical and engineering fields, particularly as we begin the transition to electrified vehicle technology,” said Nizar Trigui, Chief Technology Officer and Group President, Solutions Businesses, Bridgestone Americas. “We’re very excited to extend our partnership with the Akron Public Schools system and provide essential training and experience that can lead to a promising career for these young people.”

The collaboration between Akron Public Schools and Bridgestone was formed with the help of United Way of Summit & Medina. United Way serves as a link between the College and Career Academies of Akron and local businesses to provide hands-on learning opportunities for students and to strengthen the education to employment pipeline in Summit County.

“We are incredibly grateful to Bridgestone for renewing their commitment to the students of Akron Public Schools,” said Jim Mullen, president and CEO of United Way of Summit & Medina. “Hands-on experiences, like those Bridgestone provides to the students of East CLC, inspire students to pursue their passions and build the foundations of rewarding careers.”

APS was designated a Ford Next Generation Learning Community in May 2017. Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, is supporting the transformation of public high schools into career-themed academies to better prepare students for college and professional success in today's competitive global economy. College and Career Academies of Akron are supported by the following key strategic partners: GAR Foundation, United Way of Summit & Medina, ConxusNEO, Summit Education Initiative, and Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce.
