Image of Kofi Boakye videoAkron Public Schools alum (from Akron Early College High School) Kofi Boakye is going for his second big shot at winning Amateur Night at the Apollo February 16.

The pianist's goal is to grab a first-round win in the live competition at the famed theater in Harlem. He would then move to the quarter finals March 23. Boakye made it to the finals three years ago.

Now, he's competing again at the producers' invitation in the season opener. Akron Public Schools, of course, wishes him the very best at Amateur Night at the Apollo.

We knew him when! Watch our interview with Kofi 10 years ago when he was a 12-year-old Akron Public Schools student. The interview was conducted by our Ryan Rittenhouse and posted to You Tube in 2012.

Boakye was accepted when he was 15 into The University of Akron School of Music’s jazz program, making him the youngest African-American pianist to be accepted into the program.
