One recent chilly Wednesday, two Beacon Journal/Ohio.com journalists toured four Akron Public Schools buildings that will soon be offered up for auction: the Adult Vocational Services Building, Erie Island Elementary, Smith Elementary and Lawndale Elementary.

The district’s executive director of business affairs, Debra Foulk, and the supervisor of the building and grounds department, Lester Nash, led the tour through the musty buildings, which are no longer heated and scarcely maintained.

Some buildings are a nearly empty ghost of what they once were, containing peeling paint, soggy ceiling tiles and obscure items, like wadded paper and dissolved gym balls, left over from active school days.

Others contained piles of empty desks, old flags, unused classroom equipment, extraneous textbooks and other items in storage.

Once Foulk goes through and clears out the storage, the buildings will be offered as is.

The district is currently working on formulating an ordered list of which buildings to offer up for auction first as officials work to right-size the district.

In all, 10 buildings will be offered up for auction one by one in a process that could take up to 18 months. If the district does not receive bids it deems adequate, it will move forward with disposing of the buildings in other ways.

The buildings are:
  • Adult Vocational Services Building, 147 Park St.
  • Bettes Elementary School, 1333 Betana Ave.
  • Erie Island Elementary School, 1532 Peckham St.
  • Goodrich Middle School, 700 LaFollette St.
  • Goodyear Middle School, 49 N. Martha Ave.
  • Hotchkiss Elementary School, 33 Dorcas Ave.
  • Lawndale Elementary School, 2330 25th St. SW
  • Lincoln Elementary School, 175 W. Crosier St.
  • Rankin Elementary School, 415 Storer Ave.
  • Smith Elementary School, 941 Chester Ave.
