In honor of Black History Month, Firestone Theatre recognizes the many milestones and contributors to Black Theatre. Here is the first one.
August Wilson
August Wilson (April 27, 1945 – October 2, 2005) was an award-winning playwright best known for a series of ten plays collectively called “the Pittsburgh Cycle.” He has been referred to as the "theater's poet of Black America." Plays in the series include
Fences (1987) and
The Piano Lesson (1990), both of which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 2006, Wilson was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. A Broadway theatre has been named in his honor.
