Many thanks to the College & Career Academy of Akron named partner at Buchtel, Summa Health, for hosting this amazing event. We are grateful for the project's lead, Dr. Yoleetah Ilodi, who helped make this event enriching for 237 APS scholars.

Scholars engaged with physicians of color while participating in simulations, hands-on health-related activities, and a panel discussion focusing on:
  • Surgical Incubation (Internal Medicine),
  • Childbirth (Obstetrics & Gynecology),
  • Eye Disease (Ophthalmology),
  • Cancer Cells (Pathology),
  • Orthopedics,
  • AND MORE.
The development of Black Men in White Coats movement stemmed from the 2015 report on Altering the Course: Black Men in Medicine, a report which highlighted that, in 1978, there were 1,410 Black male applicants to medical school; and, in 2014, there were just 1,337. The annual number of Black male matriculants to medical school has decreased each year, never rising above the numbers measured in the first year of the report.
