Image of GEAR UPDuring National GEAR UP week (September 26-30), Akron City Schools observed a week dedicated to the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant. The Aim High Akron GEAR UP program, designed to serve 1,500 students, is focused on embedding a college-going culture in targeted schools and communities. The grant – from the U.S. Department of Education – is designed to increase the number of students prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education.

Last week, GEAR UP students at Buchtel CLC, East CLC, Innes CLC and Jennings CLC were engaged in programs and activities to help better understand the importance of a college education.
  • "I Have a Dream: College Edition." Students researched their dream careers and college/university and connected with their teachers to inquire about their collegiate journeys. Students then completed Dream Bubbles and posted their goals on their locker.
  • Ann Marie James from Kent State University's Nursing program visited Jennings to discuss college readiness related to nursing pathways.
  • School staff wore college T-shirts at the end of the week to bring awareness and show alma mater pride.
  • GEAR UP staff joined a few Academy Classes and engaged students in a "Roadmap to Changing Your Mindset" activity.
  • Interactive bulletin board with College Readiness questions and prizes!
  • Students participated in the GEAR UP design contest. The winner will work with an artist to learn the Graphic Design Process, and their selected design will become the Aim High Akron GEAR UP shirt!
Aim High Akron GEAR UP is committed to ensuring that our nation's youth are college and career ready. A huge thank-you to Buchtel CLC, East CLC, Innes CLC and Jennings CLC staff for celebrating and advocating for GEAR UP!
