Image of Student Board and DiversityAkron Public Schools Student Board members attended a two-day training on sharing their personal narratives to promote diversity, inclusion and equity in Akron Public Schools. The training was facilitated by Dr. S. Kent Butler. Student board members represent each of their schools on the APS Board of Education.

During the training, students had a lunch meeting with Superintendent Christine Fowler Mack to share their voices on how ESSER funds (COVID recovery) should be invested. Students worked on a shared document with Superintendent Fowler Mack and presented their suggestions out to the group.

The opportunity for the student board to share their voice with the superintendent allows the students to build confidence and develop their unique voices. As well, the two-day training created powerful student voices and is the beginning of a transformative way to use student voice to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in Akron Public Schools.
