New Expenses, New Funding

Image of APS LogoAkron Public Schools (APS) Treasurer and CFO Ryan Pendleton says the immediate financial picture has changed somewhat with news from the federal government that as much as $40 million may be arriving to manage costs associated with COVID-19’s impact.

The money will pay for some new, COVID-related expenses in the next two years. Business Affairs Director Debra Foulk says the infusion will be welcomed for covering protective and sanitizing equipment. Karen Gegick, executive director for teaching and learning, says some funds might be available for important interventions that help students with academics and social issues, especially those who have struggled due to all-remote learning.

While Pendleton says the money is of critical importance, the funds are needed for what are new COVID-related expenses that are and will be “significant."

Talk of a levy for Akron Public Schools may be delayed, due to the new funding, but only for a short time, Pendleton said. It does not, he cautioned, eliminate the need for a levy “by any means," but it may forestall it until later this year or into the next calendar year.
