More than 70 middle school students, 20 teacher chaperones and 10 safety team members attended the Goodyear STEM Career Day at Firestone CLC last Saturday. Goodyear's STEM Career Day Middle School event brought students together from across northeastern Ohio to have fun while highlighting many opportunities in STEM. Students participate in a hands-on engineering activity, various STEM-related interactive activities and an informational fair. At the event, Superintendent Christine Fowler Mack gave motivating, engaging opening remarks that got students energized and ready for the hands-on activities sessions.
Students attended five sessions that included students making and testing paper airplanes, maneuvering helium balloon drones and designing robotic arms. Students from the Firestone Robotics Vex Club also facilitated a robotic hands-on session that allowed students to maneuver robots created by the team. Participants were led to each session by Firestone student volunteers. Firestone student volunteers and the Robotics Vex Club participation were coordinated by Firestone Academy Coach Cassandra Hanna.
At the information fair, students received whistles, balls and other everyday items that can be used for STEM-related activities. Students were also served a nutritious lunch courteous of Goodyear. Channel 3 News Chief Meteorologist and "What's New" Anchor Betsy Kling provided interactive closing remarks. Students were so inspired by her message that they lined up to take pictures with her and get her autograph.
