APS Athletic Director Joe Vassalotti brought this to the attention of the school board at last evening's meeting as he shared news of athletic achievements as well.

"For the second consecutive year," he said, "North High School's girls' tennis team took the city championship. What makes their achievement more remarkable is that many on these teams had either just started to learn the sport or had never played tennis before."

He went on to recognize four high schools for the following City Series championships:
  • Firestone CLC: girls' and boys' cross country, volleyball
  • North High School: girls' tennis (first time in school history), boys' soccer
  • Ellet CLC: girls' soccer (seniors Rachel Wenzel and Sydney Tucker combined for 262 career goals, and Rachel set a state record with 95 career assists)
  • Buchtel CLC: football (also won Division IV playoff games at Woodridge and at Northwest, qualified for regionals for the first time since 2010).
Vassalotti and Buchtel football coach Brian Williams brought some of the team along to meet board members and be recognized for their accomplishments on the field and for classroom achievement. The five players introduced at the meeting (pictured below) all maintained a 3.0-grade-point average throughout the football season. Kudos to the Griffs!
