Image of STEM Career DayThe University of Akron National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Region IV hosted its annual STEM Career Day. The event was virtual, and 81 Akron Public Schools middle school students attended. During the opening ceremony, students heard from Joshua Thomas, a UA graduate and structural engineer specializing in bridges. He shared his educational and career paths along with pictures and a video of his work on bridges.

Next, the students went into breakout sessions and designed a robotic arm and a paper rocket. Students participated in the engineering activities using materials that were delivered to their schools or homes. The breakout sessions were facilitated by Mia Wilson and Bam Oluwadare. Both are NSBE members and UA students. Students were actively engaged in the engineering design process and had the opportunity to ask questions about engineering job responsibilities, salaries and college life.

A special thank-you to Julie Zhao, Ph.D., assistant dean of the College of Engineering and Polymer Science, for coordinating the event with Akron Public Schools counselors.
