Juanita Hall (1901-68), who played Bloody Mary in the original 1949 production of
South Pacific, was the first African-American performer to win a Tony Award. The actress has 12 other Broadway credits to her name, including
Flower Drum Song, and she starred in the film versions of both musicals.
