Vanzi writes: "Mikel Dijak was born with Shwachmann Diamond Syndrome (SDS) and received a bone marrow transplant at the age of two. Mikel attended APS preschool, Bridges, Findley and Seiberling through 2017-18. He left APS to attend sixth grade in another area district; he then moved to North Carolina where, just a month after arriving, he was diagnosed with cancer."

Mikel fought cancer courageously, never letting it stop him from enjoying family, friends and things he loved. Mikel was 15 years old. His story was presented on WECT TV in Brunswick County, NC:

Vanzi concluded her note: "I maintained a friendship with Mikel and his family that continued when they moved. This shows that our influence on our students can be positive and long lasting.

I will miss those late-night and early-morning calls from Mikel to show me his gaming skills or just to say, 'Whatcha doing, Ms. Wright?' RIH, my friend!!"
