Image of First Recipient of the Julienne Hogarth ScholarshipThe Miller South Art Booster Club presented Maysun Perez with the Julienne Hogarth Scholarship during Morning Meeting on April 24. Perez is the first alumni to receive the award. The scholarship was created for an alumni from Miller South’s Visual Art Program and Firestone High School’s Akron School for the Arts, who then pursues a visual-art-related career in college. Perez is currently studying at Kent State University’s Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising. This May, she will be moving to New York for a design internship at Love Shack Fancy.

Perez shared a presentation with Miller South students and staff showcasing her portfolio and recent semester abroad in Florence, Italy, where she studied fashion and fabric design. In her motivational speech, she shared that everything she has been successful at began with her time at Miller South, where she learned basic skills in art and learned how to be more confident. In high school, she transferred her painting skills to fabric design and began making her own clothes.

Perez thanked her prior Miller South teachers, Alison Rich and Malia Tschantz, and thanked her former Firestone teacher, Julienne Hogarth, who was also present. Hogarth, whom the scholarship is named after, taught art at Miller South before teaching at NIHF STEM and Firestone ASA. Art Booster Vice President Tamara James presented the award to Perez, and thanked her for the inspiring words she shared.
