Sessions will take place June 20-24 and June 27-30 from 9-11:45 a.m. at Essex School, 1160 Winhurst Drive in Northwest Akron.

Fairlawn-West United Church of Christ is working with APS to facilitate the program with a group of background-checked volunteers. The church created the safety program for Akron students in 2014 to fill a need for this type of programming for city children.

“Children in surrounding communities had opportunities to learn these valuable lessons through Safety Town, and we thought it was important for Akron’s children to have the chance to learn them as well,” said the Rev. Deborah Rhinesmith of Fairlawn-West.

Children will learn important lessons on bicycle and pedestrian safety, fire prevention and safety, and how to stay safe around dogs and guns, among other topics.

The program is open to children who reside in the city of Akron. There is no charge to attend, and children may only be enrolled for one of the sessions.

To register and for more information, go to akronsafetytown.org. Volunteers are also welcome to fill out a form on the website to be considered.

In addition to APS, Akron Summer Safety Town is made possible by the support of Akron Fire Department, Akron Police Department and the City of Akron as well as supporting partners G.A.S.P. and Akron Children's Hospital.
