Preparing for 2019-'20 School Year

Even though the school year ended just a few weeks ago, Akron Public Schools (APS) Board of Education members were already busy preparing for the upcoming 2019-20 school year at the June 24 meeting.

Board members approved a three-year service contract for district-wide school nurse and health aide services with Akron Children’s Hospital at a cost not to exceed $1.04 million for the 2019-20 school year.

The board also approved a service contract with Akron Children’s to provide nursing and medical assistant services for the APS Special Education Department for the upcoming school year at a cost not to exceed $200,000.

The board approved Superintendent David James’ recommendation to hire six APS staff members to serve as campus support leaders for the upcoming school year. The new program will be implemented at the middle school and high school levels, and the campus support leaders will be responsible for expanding extracurricular opportunities for students, as well as other related duties.

The board also designated Joshua Allen, David Rambler and Valerie Riedthaler to serve as the board’s suspension/expulsion appeal hearing officers for the 2019-20 school year. The hearing officers will be responsible for holding hearings on appeals of student suspensions and expulsions as required by the Ohio Revised Code, according to district officials.

In other business, the board:
  • approved the list of district students attending community and nonpublic schools who live two or more miles from their schools and approved payment in lieu of providing transportation for those students at the current state-approved rate of $250 per student for the 2018-19 school year;
  • accepted grant funding in the amount of $17,425 from the Summit County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board to provide programming for the prevention/reduction of the risk of mental illness and substance abuse at several APS schools, including Buchtel Community Learning Center (CLC) and Helen Arnold CLC;
  • approved additional funding from the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park in the amount of $19,300 to support the Summer Environmental Educational Academy;
  • approved the financial report for May;
  • approved the transfer of $1,347 in obsolete Firestone CLC Class of 2018 student activity funds to the public school support fund at Firestone;
  • approved the budgets for the student activity accounts for French scholarship, Spanish scholarship and the Class of 2020 at Buchtel CLC and the Student Council at Buchtel Middle School;
  • accepted $850 in donations supporting the band/orchestra at Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts;
  • amended six existing pathways at APS College & Career Academies;
  • approved the purchase of new textbooks for College & Career Academies pathways in finance, biotechnology/allied health, and fashion and product design;
  • authorized payment for the 2018-19 Advanced Placement testing exams for Firestone CLC to the College Board at a cost not to exceed $42,295;
  • approved the purchase of new testing software from Illumination Education to be used at 14 APS schools at a total cost not to exceed $183,000;
  • heard from board President the Rev. Curtis Walker Sr. who spoke about the recent closing of the preschool at Christ Woodland United Methodist Church due to the increasing gun violence in the Thurmont Road and North Hawkins Avenue neighborhood and how it affects APS as an educational institution, as well as the entire community;
  • approved the superintendent’s recommendations for professional staff, supplemental contracts, substitute teachers, miscellaneous professionals, support staff, educational assistants, child nutrition, maintenance/operations/transportation and security; and
  • announced that the formal dedication of the new APS Administration Building will be held July 11 at 2 p.m.
The next APS Board of Education meeting will be held July 15 at 5:30 p.m. in the boardroom of the Administration Building at 10 N. Main St.
