Scholar leaders from Akron Early College, Buchtel, East, Ellet, Firestone, Garfield and North participated in the Yondr Bag Cell Phone Policy Summit with Board President Derrick Hall, Vice President Diana Autry and Interim Superintendent Mary Outley. Scholars who were not in attendance from across the district had the opportunity to submit questions electronically before the Summit. The Summit was moderated by Kemp Boyd, Executive Director of Love Akron.
The Summit was an excellent discourse and allowed scholars to effectively use their voices. Board members and the superintendent stressed to the scholars that the Yondr Bag cell phone policy is a pilot, and the purpose of the pilot is to gather data and improve the learning environment. Scholars asked questions about the cost of the Yondr Bags, how emergency situations are handled if scholars need to contact their parents or guardians, and how schools were selected to participate in the Yondr Bag pilot program. As a result of the Summit, both scholars and APS leadership have a better understanding of how the Yondr Bag Cell Phone Policy affects the learning environment and scholars.
A special thank you to Walter Noland, Christopher Sims and the CCAA and safety team van drivers who provided transportation for the Summit!
